What Chain Length Should I Choose?

Chain length determines where a pendant sits, and the standard lengths are fairly consistent across the jewelry industry: 16-18 inches sits at or just below the collarbone (the most common length for name/word pendants specifically, since it keeps the piece visible and readable), 20-24 inches sits lower on the chest, and anything past 24 inches is generally considered a statement or layering length rather than an everyday one.

For men, the equivalent range runs slightly longer — 20-24 inches is typical, versus 16-18 for women.

One practical note for pendant necklaces specifically: the chain length quoted usually doesn't include the pendant itself, so the finished piece sits slightly lower than the chain number alone suggests — add roughly 1-2 inches when picturing the final drop.
